Our Story

Founded in 1935, A.F. Johnson Millwork Company represents nearly a century of architectural millwork craftsmanship. Our journey to becoming an AWI Premium Quality Certified member in 1989 reflects our dedication to the highest industry standards.

Today, our 25-person team combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, including Microvellum, AutoCAD, and CNC machinery. Located strategically in West Des Moines, Iowa, we serve clients nationwide, specializing in commercial millwork (95% of our work) with select high-end residential projects.

From concept through installation, we handle projects ranging from modest renovations to seven-figure installations, maintaining the quality standards that have defined us for 90 years.

Our History

A.F. Johnson Millwork was built on a standard that was personal before it was professional: everything "just right." Adolph F. Johnson brought that standard with him from Sweden, where he learned the trade from the artisans of his native country. He carried it through years of building out national chain stores across the Midwest, and he built it into the foundation of this company when he opened in West Des Moines. His son Dick joined him, and that same commitment passed from one generation to the next. It still drives every project that leaves this shop today.
